moderatecard benefitAmerican Airlines AAdvantage
American is quietly phasing out first class — and monetizing what's left.
American Airlines removed the Flagship First Dining pass from AAdvantage Loyalty Point Rewards (previously available at 400K, 550K, and 750K LP levels) effective March 1, 2026. The airline is redirecting that premium experience into a paid 'Flagship Business Plus' fare upsell — sold at roughly $400 over standard business. The new A321XLR, which launched in early 2026 on select routes, has no first class cabin at all. Systemwide upgrades on A321XLR itineraries now top out at business class, reducing the ceiling for high-value redemptions.
What to do
If you hold systemwide upgrades, verify whether your route operates the A321XLR or a 777 before applying one — there is no first class to upgrade into on XLR flights. For the Flagship First Dining experience, you now have to buy up to Flagship Business Plus or hold Concierge Key status. Reassess whether chasing the 400K+ LP thresholds still makes sense without the Dining pass as a reward option.
British Airways just made Avios redemptions significantly more expensive.
Effective May 27, 2026, British Airways raised fuel surcharges on award tickets by roughly 25%. A round-trip Club World ticket between London Heathrow and New York JFK now costs 176,000 Avios plus £499 (~$671) in fees — up from around £400 earlier this year and a second hike within six months. The surcharges apply across partner carriers including Air France, KLM, SAS, Cathay Pacific, JAL, and ANA, with long-haul business class routes absorbing the sharpest increases.
What to do
If you hold Avios for a transatlantic or long-haul redemption, price the cash portion before transferring. On fee-heavy routes, partner programs like Air Canada Aeroplan or Iberia Plus often price the same flights with lower surcharges. For US-Japan routes on JAL or ANA, compare direct JAL/ANA program redemptions against BA surcharges before committing.
Hyatt's new 5-tier award chart raised prices at over 100 properties.
World of Hyatt replaced its flat Standard/Off-Peak/Peak pricing with a five-tier system — Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper, and Top — effective May 2026. The change moved 112 properties into a higher tier and only 24 into a lower one. Average redemption value fell from approximately 2.52 cents per point to 2.29 cents. Popular hotels such as the Park Hyatt Zurich and Hyatt Regency Coral Gables increased by 35–45% at peak windows. Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards still transfer 1:1.
What to do
Search for properties that dropped to a lower tier — those are now better value. For properties that increased, check whether Chase Travel's Points Boost or a cash rate beats the new award price. Shoulder-season dates and longer stays may still yield strong value at Upper and Top tier properties where cash rates spike sharply.
Capital One lounge rules increasingly reward the primary traveler and make guest access less automatic on family or companion trips.
What to do
Check the exact guest policy before relying on one card for two travelers. If you fly as a pair, compare issuer lounge rules by airport rather than by card reputation.
